Hammer weld studs are used to penetrate rusty, mill scale or painted surfaces. The sharp point in combination with the pecking action of the hammer mode in the Smart Weld™ arc stud welders allow these studs to weld through difficult surfaces. The welder uses electronic circuitry to detect a ground path. If none is detected, the power supply causes the stud weld tool to lift and drop (hammer) the stud onto the base metal. This sequence is repeated until the sharp point of the stud penetrates the difficult material and a ground path is detected.
Hammer weld studs are typically used without a ferrule, but some customers choose to use a ferrule for better fillet control. If interested please ask for ferrules because Hammer weld studs are not automatically shipped with ferrules.
